While I was dusting my apartment this morning, I came across an album I’d gotten ages ago. I checked to see if it was on Spotify because, let’s face it, finding a thing to put a CD into and then playing it is not as easy as it once was. Anyway! The album was on Spotify.
Okay. I decide to listen to it and then remember it’s an all-woman band. Oh fuck. I hope none of them turned out to be TERFs. That would just be the worst. I hope onto Wikipedia and there’s nothing really raising red flags at me. Oh. They’re lesbians? That’s reassuring-
Wait, no, there are definitely lesbian TERFs. It’s A Whole Thing. And it’s awful. Okay. I guess I’m going onto Twitter. They’ve got a Twitter. Fantastic. I’m scrolling through likes. They’re liberal. Good to know. No red flags. Back to their actual tweets. Scrolling. Scrolling. Scrolling.
There’s a picture of them at an event and one of them is embracing a teen in a trans pride t-shirt. Cue the sigh of relief. Looks like I’m in the clear.
The existence of body-positive TERFS still drives me insane, like… how are you even here? How are you going to claim people aren’t defined by their bodies and then turn around and say trans women aren’t women because of theirs? Can you hear yourself talk? Did your echo chamber go silent or did you just stop listening?
I think you don’t know what radfems believe
Seeing as I used to be a TERF myself before I realized how messed up it was, before I knew I was trans and I started talking to some people who would help get me out of that hole–I can assure you, I do. But let’s review, shall we?
According to Wikipedia, TERFS are “TERF (/ˈtɜːrf/) is an acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist. First recorded in 2008, the term was originally used to distinguish trans-inclusive feminists from a group of radical feminists that support the rejection of the assertion that trans women are women, the exclusion of trans women from women’s spaces, and opposition to transgender rights legislation. Trans-inclusive feminists assert that these ideas are transphobic. Use of the term TERF has since broadened to include reference to people with trans-exclusionary views who are not necessarily involved with radical feminism.[1][2][3]”. The acronym TERF itself is indicative of transphobia, in that it denies the womanhood of trans women and forcibly excludes them from women’s rights movements. These “women’s rights activists,” however, often follow the same road that many traditional feminists do, simply with a heavy transphobic influnce–and this includes the body positivity movement, which (according to wikipedia) is “is a social movement focused on the acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, and physical abilities, while challenging present-day beauty standards as an undesirable social construct”.
Do you see why these two cannot coincide?
A lot of TERFs will claim to be body positive, but turn sround and claim that trans women are not women because of their bodies and because they do not meet their own ideals for womanhood–which is going against the most basic of principles in the body positivity movement: they are excluding people from their pro-women, pro-women movement because they are not women enough in their eyes and their bodies are not up to their standards.
The body positivity movement and transphobia do not coincide. When they are both there, it is hypocrisy.
you used to be a “terf” but don’t even know that terfs don’t exist?
If you think that denying the existence of a discriminatory group makes them go away, you’re a fool.
I’m saying that radical feminism isn’t trans exclusionary, and it can’t be trans exclusionary
To talk about non-garden fruits for a minute, if you live in temperate North America you may occasionally see tropical fruits available that you’ve never heard of. Some of them look very pretty or else really cool, and you might find yourself curious to try one, only to find it…bland at best. Such was my first experience with dragonfruit.
But! One time I was in an Asian grocery store eyeing the soursops and the owner placed one into my hand that had dark skin rather than bright green and was practically falling apart and he said it was ready to eat today. Despite its condition I took his word for it, took it home and then peeled off the skin and ate a piece…was to this day one of the best fruits I’ve ever eaten. Wonderfully sweet and juicy and just a little bit tart. It was perfect. I told my aunt about it and she said she’d tried soursop before and hated it. I gave her a piece and she changed her mind instantly. And that’s when I remembered that the owner had said that one was ready to eat that day.
It brought to mind persimmons, which when you eat them while they’re still beautifully smooth and firm and bright orange, they’re awful. But when they’re wrinkled and soft and browning they taste like the best plum you’ve ever had, sans pit. And so one day I saw dragonfruits for sale in my local grocery store. They looked bad. They were wrinkled and the bright fuchsia colour had faded to a dull magenta. And I wondered…is it perhaps the same as the soursop and persimmons? Friends, it was! Juicy and sweet like sugar water and something all its own as well. Lovely texture, tiny, easily crunched seeds, and very juicy.
So! Some fruits aren’t truly ready to eat until the point you’d think they’re starting to go off. I don’t know how many other fruits follow this rule but for anyone curious to try new things but doesn’t want to spend the money for nothing:
Soursops–Not sure when exactly because I’ve only gotten to have it twice, but I think fall is good. You don’t want them when they’re verdant green and firm, then they’re just sour and nasty (hence the name). You want them when the skin has darkened to brownish or almost black and is soft and easily separated from the fruit.
No
Yes
Persimmons–December is when I usually get them. Some varieties are apparently not astringent when underripe, but why take the chance?
No
Yes
Dragonfruits–Not sure when, but seems to be starting now! The one I just ate was bland to start, but very sweet in the middle.
No
And I can’t really find a good picture of one that’s good to eat, but basically if the white part is still white, but the skin looks like crap you’re probably good.
Happy treating yourself to an unusual fruit once in a while!
